An application for exemption from personal appearance allows an accused to seek relief from being physically present in court proceedings under certain circumstances. This is primarily governed by Sections 205 and 317 of the CrPC and is granted at the discretion of the court, depending on the facts and stage of the case.

A Vakalatnama is a formal written authorization given by a client to an advocate to represent them before a court, whereas a Memo of Appearance is a simpler document filed by an advocate to appear on behalf of a party without requiring full authorization. Both play distinct roles in litigation and procedure.

A "Memo of Appearance" is a procedural document filed by an advocate to notify the court of their appearance on behalf of a party, usually as a temporary step until a formal Vakalatnama is filed. While the Memo is signed only by the advocate, a Vakalatnama is a formal power of attorney signed by the client, granting full authority to the advocate.
