1. The Scale of Cyber Crime in India

- Legal recognition to digital signatures and electronic records.
- Offences such as hacking, identity theft, cheating by personation, publishing obscene material, and violation of privacy.
- Key sections often invoked:
- 43, 43A: Unauthorized access, damage to data, compensation for negligence in protecting sensitive personal data.
- 66, 66C, 66D: Hacking, identity theft, and cheating by impersonation.
- 67, 67A, 67B: Publishing obscene or sexually explicit content.
- 72, 72A: Breach of confidentiality and privacy.
3. How to Report Cyber Crime
- Collect evidence: screenshots, URLs, chat logs, transaction IDs, and timestamps.
- File complaint:
- Online at cybercrime.gov.in.
- Call the national helpline 1930 for financial frauds.
- Police follow-up:
- Complaints are routed to the concerned State/UT police cyber cells.
- For immediate threats, also file an FIR at the local police station.
- CERT-In: For large-scale breaches, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team coordinates mitigation.
